Firefox 153 enables containers, GTK rounded corners by default

Von: Joey Sneddon

Mozilla has released Firefox 153 with built-in containers, QR code generation and more quick actions in the address bar. This is the final “monthly” stable release before Mozilla moves to a faster release cadence, putting out new stable versions of Firefox every two weeks. On an unrelated note, Firefox has decided to resume activity on X (formerly Twitter) after a year of no activity. Like all updates, you can get this one for Windows, macOS and Linux, as well as for Android and iOS (mobile versions have different features and are not covered in this post). Containers now enabled by […]

Firefox will update twice as often from September

Von: Joey Sneddon

Firefox logo with a pleased face drawn on it, sitting on a purple background.Mozilla is changing Firefox’s release schedule from September, with new stable versions planned every two weeks instead of once a month. The faster release cadence will, Mozilla says, make the schedule more predictable and allow features and improvements which are ready to ship to do so sooner. But in its message to developers, Mozilla describes the change as an experiment, one it says it plans to “closely monitor” to make sure the impact is positive and, if needed, adjust the speed of releases. Firefox 154, due for release on 18 August, will be the final stable version released under the […]

Firefox 152 debuts with new-look Settings, odd way to mute tabs

Von: Joey Sneddon

Mozilla has released Firefox 152 with revamped Settings and faster ways to share web content – plus, a peculiar way to mute noisy tabs. The update is available from today (15 June, 2026) on Windows, macOS and Linux, as well as for Android and iOS (mobile versions have different features and are not covered in this post). Firefox 152’s headline change is the revamped Settings page. We knew this was coming as Mozilla’s been teasing it for over a year. The company says the new look offers “streamlined organisation, clearer groupings, and improved navigation for easier customisation”. Since many users find […]

Firefox’s free VPN lifts data limit, offers 28 server locations

Von: Joey Sneddon

Firefox VPN.You can now use Firefox’s free built-in VPN without a monthly data limit – but only until August 31, 2026. Mozilla is also temporarily expanding the list of VPN server locations available to proxy your browsing traffic via, up from the current set of 5 locations to a more generous 28. The extra server locations during the promotion: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Chile, Colombia, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Italy, Malaysia, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Sweden and Thailand. The Firefox 151 release in May added the option to select from a list of VPN servers (though it’s […]

Firefox for Android’s Play Integrity check hits custom ROMs

Von: Joey Sneddon

Cartoon sewer pipe leaking green toxic sludge with Mozilla logo emblem inside pipe opening.Mozilla has added support for Google’s Play Integrity API, known for blocking users of custom ROMs from accessing banking apps, to Firefox for Android. Per a resolved issue in Mozilla’s public tracker, a new lib-integrity-googleplay library was added to Firefox’s Android codebase. It requests a Play Integrity token which is then passed to Mozilla’s MLPA (Machine Learning Proxy) server. The token is used to access Firefox’s server-side AI tools, like Smart Window, for rate-limiting purposes, ensuring only unmodified, Play-installed copies of Firefox on Google-certified devices use Mozilla’s compute infra. Per documentation for the API, developers can: “…call the Integrity API […] to […]

Thunderbolt is an open-source ‘AI client’ from Mozilla’s for-profit arm

Von: Joey Sneddon

Robots in the sand.Thunderbolt is a new open source AI client from the Mozilla-owned MZLA Technologies aimed at enterprises who want to run self-hosted chatbots on their own infrastructure. MZLA Technologies is the for-profit subsidiary of the Mozilla Foundation that develops and maintains the Thunderbird email client. It says Thunderbolt was created with the support of a grant from Mozilla. Terrible name aside (Intel owns a trademark for ‘Thunderbolt’ which Apple markets heavily, so it’s not the best choice for clarity), the LLM that MZLA Technologies asked to write their press release says that Thunderbolt is a “sovereign AI client” for organisations who want their own AI infrastructure. Firefox Nova – our first look at the browser’s big redesign

Von: Joey Sneddon

A new-look Firefox is on the way, with Mozilla designers working on a ‘Nova’ redesign that introduces more curves and colour. First reported by tech blogger Söeren Hentzschel, who published several internal design mockups, Nova gives Firefox a more rounded appearance: tabs and the address bar sport uniform radii, and sit in a segmented, floating island UI element. Everything nestles neatly. Elements like hover effects in the menu and parts of the New Tab Page are similarly rounded. If you look closely at the image above you’ll also spot a set of refreshed icons that (surprise!) are also less angular […]

Firefox 148 released with AI kill switch + more

Von: Joey Sneddon

The Firefox 148 update sees its stable release today, bringing with it a much-request ‘AI kill switch’ to easily disable all AI-powered features within the browser. Mozilla has said future updates to the browser will not re-enable AI features once disabled. Given that Mozilla now measures its success by how much revenue it makes from AI features in its products, Firefox included, that’s a reassuring stance. To disable AI features in Firefox go to Settings > AI Controls. Slide the ‘Block AI Enhancements’ toggle to turn off ChatGPT and other chatbots in the sidebar, AI link previews, the (supposedly) smart […]

Meet Orbit, Mozilla’s AI Assistant Extension for Firefox

Von: Joey Sneddon

Orbit by Mozilla is a new AI-powered assistant for the Firefox web browser that makes summarising web content while you browse as easy as clicking a button. After all, why read an article to understand what it says when you can read an AI summary rephrasing the article instead? ;) Mozilla’s AI assistant Orbit is currently a beta product and available to install from the Firefox add-ons site where the extension, which works on Firefox for Windows, macOS, and Linux, is pitched thus: Orbit empowers you to stay informed and efficient by delivering the information you need in a condensed […]
